Nestled within the magnificent 450-year-old City Palace, the City Palace Museum, Udaipur is a treasure trove of history, art, and culture. Once the residence of Mewar’s rulers, it was officially transformed into a museum in 1969 by Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Mewar (r. 1955-1984 CE). The Mardana Mahal and Zenana Mahal were entrusted to the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF), ensuring the preservation of this royal heritage. Over the decades, the museum has flourished, attracting visitors from across the world.
A Glimpse into Mewar’s Glorious History
The Mewar dynasty, known as Suryavanshis (descendants of the Sun God), traces its lineage to Lord Rama’s son, Lav. Before Udaipur became the capital, cities like Nagda and Aghatpur (Ahad) played this role. In 1213 CE, Rawal Jaitra Singh shifted the capital to Chittor, where a grand fortification was built. However, due to frequent invasions, Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537-1572 CE) sought a peaceful haven, leading to the foundation of Udaipur in 1553 CE. Successive rulers expanded the City Palace, making it a grand spectacle of Rajput architecture.
Following India’s independence in 1947, princely states merged into the Union of India. Many royal estates, including City Palace Udaipur, were converted into heritage hotels or museums, ensuring their upkeep and historical significance.
